Bible Hill - Justin Trudeau was pleased to see that hurricane Earl did not deter people from attending a meet and greet barbecue Saturday in Bible Hill.
And, he said, he was quite touched to see a message of welcome as he arrived at Truro Raceway.
Trudeau spent much of Saturday afternoon with local candidate Jim Burrows talking to student leaders at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College about agriculture before heading to the raceway grandstand.
The Papineau MP said since he was in this part of the country for a caucus event he decided to see if he could do something to help out some local ridings. The barbecue was held as a fundraiser for the Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley Liberal Association.
"Getting out to connect is important," he said before speaking to those attending the event. "Government needs to be interacting with people."
When asked about the possibility of running for the leadership of the party, he said that he is very busy with the work he is doing now and that Canadians are discovering that the Liberals have a strong leader right now in Michael Ignatieff.
"The leadership question is one that will come up down the road and I will make a decision," he said.
Trudeau is very concerned about the environment, and often speaks on the topic.
"I think people take the environment seriously but they don't know what action they can take to make a difference," he said. "We need government that doesn't pretend people need to choose between what is good for the environment and what is good for the economy."
He believes that the path to a prosperous economy is to be on the cutting edge when it comes to the environment.
Trudeau brought up the subject of Stephen Harper and the Conservative government during his speech, saying that party is using negativity and fear.
He said the personal attack ads created by the Conservatives are undemocratic because they encourage people, who will not vote for their party, not to vote at all.
"We're not getting enough leadership from government," he said. "We're in a big pit of deficit and he has no plan to move us forward."
