TRURO - As hurricane Earl moves towards Nova Scotia Saturday, residents are reminded to actively take precautions to remain safe during the storm.
Emergency Management Minister Ramona Jennex said the best way to keep safe is by being prepared. Some of the following tips are simple, but effective, ways to be ready:
- Have a household emergency kit
that includes food, water, clothing, blankets, medication, flashlights, battery or crank-powered radio, extra batteries, a first-aid kit and copies of important papers.
- Have enough needs met to be self-sufficient for at least three days. Key items include bottled water, non-perishable food, spare house and car keys, prescription medications, eyeglasses, lots of gas in vehicles and some cash in small bills and coins.
- Outdoor items like lawn furniture, toys, garbage cans and barbeques can also become deadly projectiles in hurricane-force winds and should be taken inside or tied down.
In addition, the Nova Scotia SPCA is reminding pet caregivers to take precautions for their animals as well, including:
- Keep pets indoors and keep them calm.
- Ensure vaccinations are up-to-date and that records are handy.
- Keep a collar with licence and identification on your pet.
- Prepare a special kit for your pet that includes a leash, carrying case, food, water, bowls, toys, medications and any special instructions for the care of your pet.
- Put a sign on your door that indicates how many pets live at your residence in the event that you must leave your home.
