DEBERT - A single vehicle accident that occurred Tuesday evening near Debert has claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman from Prospect Bay.
Amy Elizabeth Osmond was a passenger in a 1997 blue Chevy Cavalier that left Highway 104 just before the Debert off-ramp at 7:35 p.m. The car was traveling west-bound when it went out of control, fishtailed into the median and rolled several times.
The two passengers in the back seat, including Osmond and a 21-year-old male from Halifax, were thrown from the vehicle. They were transported to Colchester Regional Hospital and later to the QEII Hospital in Halifax where Osmond was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. as a result of head and chest injuries.
The male who was thrown from the car is reportedlyin serious condition suffering from internal injuries and a severe leg injury. The driver and front passenger were wearing their seat belts, remained in the vehicle and received only minor injuries.
The Colchester District RCMP and Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident.
Road conditions at the time were clear and the RCMP believe driver inexperience was a contributing factor to the crash as the driver of the vehicle had just obtained her driver's license earlier in the day.
A preliminary police investigation revealed the driver hit the rumble strip in the right side of the road. She then over-steered which caused the vehicle to spin out of control into the ditch.
