MILLBROOK - It was an emotional day for some Covergys employees Wednesday as the call centre operated for the final time.
"It's a hard day for everybody. It's a sad day,"said a woman who wished to remain anonymous."I can't say anything else. I'm about to cry."
The middle-aged woman told the Truro Daily News the closure of the centre was difficult to deal with even though employees and public were made aware of the closure in early June.
At the time, the estimated 250 remaining employees were told the shutdown was related to a drop in service calls which resulted when the inbound contact centre lost a major client. The client wasn't named but it is believed to have been Sprint.
"I woke up thinking I would not be going to a job after (Wednesday) and that's not a good feeling," the employee said. "We'll miss each other ... we're like a family."
Despite the despair, it was "business as usual" at the company yesterday, she said.
The last shift ended last night at midnight.
Convergys opened locally in 2004 and has employed as many as 500 people. Layoffs began a year ago with about 70 people initially losing their jobs.
