BIBLE HILL – The quick actions of a theft victim are being credited with helping catch the alleged culprits.

Colchester County RCMP Sgt. Al Affleck said a grey 2004 Toyota Echo was stolen from a Hilden driveway between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 2:26 a.m. Wednesday. The person discovered the vehicle missing and immediately called police.

"Within a half an hour we spotted the vehicle," Affleck said Thursday afternoon, noting typically people do not report such crimes until later the next morning. "It's really good for us to have real-time information."

A Mountie spotted the vehicle with two people inside it on Harmony Ridge Road. The officer turned around to pursue the vehicle, which he noticed had turned onto Jerad Road in Lower Harmony.

The officer located the vehicle moments later in the ditch with one young man inside. The RCMP dog was called in and tracked the second person to the back of a garage on Harmony Ridge Road.

Inside the stolen vehicle, police found a Spider-Man backpack containing items stolen that night in the Harmony-Greenfield area. The items included three cellphones, three GPS systems, a pair of sunglasses and an electronic devise charger.

A 16-year-old boy from Truro and a 17-year-old boy from Millbrook were charged with theft of a motor vehicle, break and enter into a garage, five thefts from vehicles and several breaches of probation and undertakings. They appeared in Shubenacadie Youth Court on Thursday and were remanded into custody until Monday when they will appear in Truro Youth Court.

Police executed three search warrants at homes in Millbrook, Truro and Bible Hill on Wednesday evening in connection with the ongoing investigation and seized iPods, earphones, cellphones, car adapters, an MP3 player, PSP, satellite radio and several digital cameras. Two men were arrested and released as police continue to investigate by attempting to identify the items that may have been stolen from the recent rash of thefts from vehicles.

Since April 1, the Colchester County RCMP has responded to 166 reports of thefts from vehicles.

Affleck reiterated the police's message to lock up and remove valuables from your vehicles. "Don't give these people these opportunities," he said.

One of the victims was able to locate her cellphone by calling her number.

"She was wondering where her cellphone was," Affleck explained. When she dialed her phone number, "We answered the call."

It's true. These kids will get off with a "It's your first time, don't feel bad" or a "We can make these kids ideal citizens if we give them a break". Maybe even a little community service work where they can make a "difference". As good as it is to hear they got caught, another two kids will take their place because there is no deterrent to stop them from doing it. The " Young Offenders Act" is a joke. Still it could be worse. I could be one of the many police officers who are working on this case, only to see them walk out of the courtroom laughing at what they will receive for doing this.

SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK How can you expect these young people to be held accountable for theft when they watch as someone much older, get "house arrest, maybe a couple months in Springhill or a small fine for REAL criminal activity? The young people must watch as other criminals deal in stolen cars, trucks, fruniture etc. and get the proverbial "slap on the wrist". It all comes down to who you have for a lawyer and who you have to back you for your court appearance. Let's just accept the fact that the system does not work! It's about time they give these criminals hard time in jail, and not let them sweet talk their way out of what they did or have someone else to take the fall for them! Yup, they sure live high on the hog, while the rest of tax payers work hard for what they have . . . . oh, but they are really sorry for what they did!

To the dude who got robbed. I got robbed too and I know its frustrating. I think your frustration with the police though may be misplaced. These punks are so quick. Did you wait tilll the morning after like I did to report it? I know I only noticed the morning after and reported it. Not much the police can do by that point except take the info in case your stuff turns up. Imagine how many calls the police get when whole neighbourhoods get hit. We have to remember that the police also have to respond to other emergencies that occur, life and death stuff that requires immediate attention. How can they be everywhere at once? NO I DON'T THINK THE OTHER NIGHT WAS A FLUKE. The police got the call in the middle of the night and were able to get a good idea of where in the whole big county of Colchester to focus on. They stepped up patrols in the suspected area in an attempt to catch the punks in progress not to mention get the RCMP dog to track a fresh scent. I know your frustration first hand. I want to thank the police for their quick reaction the other night and for the quick calls from the public that enabled all this.

There's nothing in this world worst than a thief! Lazy parents are too passive to discipline their children enough to teach them about respect, so they're too quick to develop twisted street morals. I don't know how many ingrates I see dissrespecting people on the streets openly and so often. I'm not too impressed with the way these robberies are being handled either. My wife n I got hit for over $2000 in cash & valuables in one night out of our locked car. Cops didn't even come visit, simple phone interview must suffice these days I guess. It's a shame that it took over 166 robberies before the cops actually made an arrest (BY FLUKE!). Are they doing any investigative work beyond the initial reports? Are our taxes paying for them to power into donuts while pawn shops are rolling in their glory and we get hit with higher insurance premiums. Let's get these cops on weight watchers or something, get Jenny Craig to show em how to police a town.

I say Bring Back the Chain Gangs, Hard Work ,NO TV,, No computer, one phone call a week. write letters, give them a dictionary not spell check on computer. NO computer. Privleges can be returned for proper behavior. Have you ever noticed people who work hard every day have little time or energy for going out at night stealing, and breaking things. Also prison wear MUST have elastic in the pants.

To bad we wouldn't get some of our things back, they sell it and get cought and there home an hour after there cought doing the same thing again. The courts will play with them and then throw ot out and then there free to continue to rip off who ever they please. The system is made for the teens, when I was a teen and you stole something, you went to jail, not a micky mouse jail, real jail, sad.

I completely agree.,.the reason why these kids are doing this stuff is because they know nothing will be done..I remember growing up when your parents were actually allowed to disipline their kids and we didn't do stuff like this because we were scared of the consequences..because back then there were consequences. The justice system is not doing these kids any favour by caudling ..it's just going to make it worse for them when they get older and break the law. BECAUSE YOU WILL GET JAIL TIME THEN!!!

Yes max time for these punks. Its not just about losing the odd change or ipod cable. Its no so much about the "things" its about someone violating us, and not feeling safe. These IDIOTS aka COWARDS are brazen and need to be taught a serious lesson and to be an example for all the other punks. Our neighbourhood has been hit a few times and the kids are scared. You are scaring kids you idiots, stealing the DS they so dreamed of having and taking their favorite DVD's. They have been left heartbroken and scared. The community is fighting back, being more vigilant because of you. Lights are being left on, video surveillanvce being placed in places you never dreamed, motion lights being instaled, people are getting quicker at calling the police etc. People all over the county are fed up and I hope you cowards do not get physically hurt while someone is defending their home, property or personal well-being because that is what this is all leading to I fear. You should be ashamed of yourselves!! Learn a lesson here and stop now before things get worse for you.

Where did all this begin , why do they steal is boredom or parents who want to discipline and have thier hands tied . When I was a kid ,if we did anything like this we were kept at home and given a swift boot in the a-----s and made to work. I think the goverment is lazy not the parents . There has been talk for years about revising the Young Offenders Act .Well guys what are you waiting for , us to do it . I'd love to catch someone stealing from me !!!!!!!!
