TRURO - A big bang shook Robie Street yesterday after a truck crashed into a utility pole, sending transformers plummeting to the ground.

"There was a big flash and then a big bang. I thought something blew up," said Robie Street resident Romaine Piers. "We ran out onto the street and saw the telephone pole and everything was laying down there."

Truro police were called to the single-vehicle collision at 12:48 p.m. between Kiwanis Pond and Giles Street. The crash knocked out power to Blockbuster and Frank & Gino's restaurant and traffic was delayed along the busy thoroughfare.

Traffic had to be rerouted using both Longworth Avenue and Juniper Street as officials cleared the scene and repaired the damage. No one was injured.

Truro police Const. Dan Taylor said the truck driver lost control and struck two utility poles and a fire hydrant.

"One electric pole had some transformers on top, which landed on the road and exploded," he told the Truro Daily News.

Truro firefighters and Nova Scotia Power also responded. Robie Street was expected to be closed for much of the night as the pole and transformer had to be replaced.

The driver of the vehicle was charged with driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Truro police continue to investigate and would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the crash. They can call 895-5351.
