TRURO - A project on one of Truro's oldest homes has earned a youngster recognition from the town.
Aidan Zann-Roland did his heritage fair project on the John L. Doggett House, located at 111 Willow St. where his grandparents Paul and Jan Zann have lived since 1976.
"It's one of the very few original farmhouses left in Truro," Aidan told town council on Monday. "The house is set back on the street because the original stage coach went right past it."
Thomas Crowe built the home in 1839 for the first owner John Doggett, who ran the hotel located where the Superstore is now.
"When my mother was my age she found a secret small door," the 10-year-old said. "Inside you could crawl in a tunnel through the house. She found these old newspapers ... and a black top hat."
He said trick or treating is a fun time at his grandparents' home.
"A lot of people believe that this house is haunted, (making) for a spooky Halloween house," Aidan said. "I believe it's haunted too, but the ghosts ... are all friendly."
The Zanns registered the property as a heritage property in 1982.
Mayor Bill Mills said the town annually presents an award to a student who's project promotes awareness of the town's rich history. He presented Zann-Roland with the town's heritage fair award, a gift certificate for himself and one for his Grade 4 class at Truro Elementary School.
He also commented on the top hat and jacket Zann-Roland was sporting for his power-point presentation.
"I see a future mayor," Mills said. "At least not the next election, I hope."
