HALIFAX - A high-profile Halifax immigration lawyer believes a Truro woman could be at risk of having her rights denied if her visitor status is not extended beyond Feb. 1.
"If she has submitted her immigration application then she should be able to get visitor extension applications for a minimum of six months at a time, indefinitely, until her permanent residency application is adjudicated," Lee Cohen said, regarding Reaghen Bagnell, an American citizen who is married to a man with dual Canadian/American citizenship.
Bagnell filed her permanent resident application with immigration officials last Aug. 20 but was recently told she may not have time to file another visitor extension prior to Feb. 1.
"If she has already applied for her permanent resident status then I do not understand the declining visitor extensions and there is something wrong there and it needs to be explored because there is a right there that is being denied her."
