HALIFAX - A military bus collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle Friday morning, killing a woman and sending three others to hospital.

RCMP Cpl. Joe Taplin said paramedics declared the woman dead at the scene of the crash outside Dart/mouth.

The bus and SUV burst into flames after the crash on the Forest Hills Extension in Westphal.

Taplin told reporters at the scene that investigators were trying to determine if the SUV crossed the centre line before the crash at about 9:40 a.m.

Two witnesses said the military vehicle was in its own lane, travelling at a normal speed, when they heard a loud bang and saw debris flying everywhere.

Afterward, there was fire below the vehicles, they said. It rapidly took over both vehicles. People from another vehicle behind the bus pulled two people out of the bus, but the SUV was too fully engulfed to reach the female driver.

The three people taken to hospital were occupants of the bus. One man had serious leg injuries while the two others were described as having serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The name and age of the victim wasn't released.
