TRURO - The numbers continue to grow.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, 2,253 Truro voters (25.3 per cent of eligible residents), had already cast their ballots, which is already more than the 19 per cent total from the last municipal election four year's ago.

And, that is with four more days still to go until the actual election. The increase in voter interest is believed to have been prompted by the town's switch to electronic voting.

Votes by ward:

Ward 1 - 24.9 per cent.

Ward 2 - 25.9 per cent.

Ward 3 - 25.2 per cent.

Imagine, In the last civic election, only one in five eligible voters voted allowing less than 2000 people of 13000 people in Truro to decide who would be the mayor and the councillors, and who will make all those financial decisions that we al must live with and pay for. Reasons?? Apathy? Who cares? No time to vote? Poor Candidates running? I expect we would get more turn out if the same dinosaurs were not running. Perhaps we should change the Provincial laws such that people can only have some limited time on a Council, say 8 years like the US Presidents or some time limit. That way we would have more new people offering in all ridings. Unfortunately the new people running this year in wards where existing Councillors are also running will end up splitting the vote between themselves which will work to make it very easy for the incumbent to "coast safely" to re election. If you want to level that playing field,,,,,, then DONT VOTE FOR THE ENCUMBANDT,,especially the Councilor who has been on Council the longest,,,,,,,, use both your votes to vote for the new blood who are trying the hardest to gain your vote. In the end, it will be much like the same old Council, The same old mayor and 3 old Councilors who have been there for over 10 years. How much change the 3 new Councillors can make remains to be seen. Good luck and keep trying!!
