"We're quite encouraged," said returning officer Lorraine Dawson, who said a total of 593 voters turned out for the first day of advance polls on Thursday.

Mayor Bob Taylor has already been acclaimed along with councillors in Districts 1, 2, 4 and 8. As a result, advance voting at those polls recorded lower numbers as the only remaining vote is for the African Nova Scotian school board member.

"It looks like there's some interest out there," Dawson said.

The advance numbers by district are:

District 1 - 0;

District 2 - 7;

District 3 - 57;

District 4 - 0;

District 5 - 72;

District 6 - 52;

District 7 - 215;

District 8 - 6;

District 9 - 34;

District 10 - 46;

District 11 - 104.

Total = 593
