TRURO - Election officials in Truro are pleased with results from the first day of electronic voting.

The municipal election got underway yesterday with 470 people voting for their favourite candidates in Truro and for school board representatives by 6 p.m. The computer and phone voting system opened at noon.

Returning officer Jud Pearson was pleased with the early response.

"It's been pretty steady all afternoon ... we had about five per cent turnout in the first five hours. I think that is a commendable start," said Pearson.

In Stewiacke, an estimated 65 people had cast a ballot, either electronically or paper, by 6:30 p.m. The polls did not close until 8 p.m.

Voter turnout for Colchester County's advance poll yesterday was unavailable at press time.

The Truro Daily News will post voter turnout numbers daily.
