WENTWORTH - A petition has been formed by a group of concerned people who do not want wind turbines in Wentworth.
Almost 100 signatures were gathered online as of Wednesday afternoon in protest of the proposed construction of an industrial wind power facility for Wentworth Valley.
The Folly Lake-Wentworth Valley Environmental Preservation Society is calling on the provincial government to place a moratorium on the development of industrial wind power facilities until a comprehensive policy is in place and further study is done on the potential impacts industrial wind power plants can have on a region.
An Ontario-based company is proposing 66 120 m or 400 foot high turbines (36 stories) be erected on Higgins Mountain, stretching from across the highway from Folly Lake to Ski Wentworth.
A number of turbines would line the ridge of the Valley, in close proximity to homes. The 100 megawatt industrial power facility would produce enough energy to supply power to up to 30,000 homes in Nova Scotia, making it one of the largest industrial wind power plants in the country.
The benefit of wind power includes helping decrease the production of greenhouse gases and reliance on traditional power sources.
However, there are concerns with a large wind development located in a rural community, including noise and possible health implications, adverse light effects, including a shadow flicker or strobe light on the ski hill and surrounding homes, decreased property values, the impact on wildlife and recreational trails and the aesthetic impact.

This is a classic example of NIMBY! (Not In My Back Yard).
Instilling fear by unfounded statements regarding possible health implications, adverse light effects, decreased property values, impact on wildlife. Show us the proof to back up these statements! Wind Power is an absolute clean and renewal source of energy for the future. If we as a society wish to continue the present lifestyle we have all become accustomed to, then we need to accept clean alternates such as wind energy instead of the present Nova Scotia Government's committment to utilize environmental unfriendly coal and oil fired generators.
I invite everyone to spend some time downwind from the NSPI coal fired power generating plant in Trenton, NS if you want to witness genuine health implications, decreased property values and aesthetic impacts.

Why are people still fighting wind power? I have one 500 meters from my home and we rarely ever notice it. Wind power is silent and clean. It is the future, people should get used to having them around. It beat the hell out of coal and oil.
