Final card before mid-winter break

Tomorrow afternoon marks the final card of live racing at Truro Raceway before the traditional live racing mid-winter break.
The anticipated return date is the first Sunday in March. There are about 100 horses set for 12 dashes of fast-paced entertainment with the top class to be featured in Race 11.
Picked as the early favourite, the New Brunswick entry Melody's Cookie Boy, owned by veteran horseman Mel Land, has drawn a poor starting post leaving out of eight.
Stablemates Cluck Hanover and Dreams Matter, out of the Romo string, along with Ross Toole's Keep The Ball Rollin also have the talent to command a lot of attention to the finish.
Throughout the month-long interval, the raceway will continue to remain open on a daily basis to present both thoroughbred and harness racing from the finest racetracks in North America.
CAMERA SHY WINNER
Remaining camera shy for his entire racing career, the six-year-old Deminimis posted his first win last weekend, earning his way to victory lane for owner/driver Craig Carey of Truro.
The American-bred son of Artiscape has experienced two name changes - being first tagged Allamerican Excess, then Allamerican Ether in 2006 and, finally, Deminmis.
O'BRIEN AWARDS
The stage is set in Mississauga, Ont., tonight for the annual presentation of the O'Brien Awards as Canada celebrates the best in harness racing in 2009.
These are considered to be the highest honours in the sport in this country.
Last year, Atlantic Canadians were rejoicing in the accomplishments of Phil Pinkney as the recipient of horseman of the year along with the connections of Somebeachsomewhere who took home trophies for horse of the year, three-year-old pacing colt of the year and the prestigious Cam Fella Award.
The Cam Fella Award recognizes dedication to Canadian harness racing by an individual or group.
BEACH BABY
On Jan. 19, the first offspring of the retired world champion Somebeachsomewhere hit the ground at the Steiner Stock Farm in Lima, Ohio.
HARKNESS UPDATE
Doug Harkness, well-known editor of the Atlantic Post Calls publication, remains a patient in the intensive care unit of the Cumberland Regional Hospital in his hometown of Amherst.
Harkness is recuperating from extensive heart surgery on Dec. 1 in Halifax. A trust account has been set up for the Harkness family at the TD Bank in Truro.
