SUMMERSIDE – Island gear heads are in for a treat this weekend in Summerside.
The second annual Summer Rev Up takes place June 2 and 3 in support of the Stars for Life Foundation for Autism.
John MacLean, who owns Gearhead Kustoms in West Devon, has an 18-year-old son with autism.
He started the auto show at Credit Union Place as a fundraiser for the foundation last year.
“It’s going to be a two-day show this year, so that’ll give everybody a chance to get in that couldn’t make it last year,” said MacLean of this year’s Rev Up.
Sixty-two custom vehicles from all around the Maritimes have registered for this weekend, including muscle cars, street rods, antiques, motorcycles and snowmobiles.
Returning from last year’s show is a local version of the “Dukes of Hazard’s” General Lee.
But there will also be plenty of new entrants for local car lovers to ogle.
One in particular, the “Prowler from Hell” from Halifax, N.S., should wow the crowd with its elaborate paint job.
The car is a 2000 Plymouth Prowler, adorned with skulls and wings created by the crew at Dartmouth’s Overall Custom. The artwork even extends into the Prowler’s interior and its engine compartment.
“It’s a very extreme car,” said MacLean.
The venue at Credit Union Place can accommodate up to 120 cars, and also allows the event to be held rain or shine.
Twenty-one awards will be handed out during the show, including honours for best-of-show, people’s choice and farthest distance travelled to attend.
The first 2,000 people through the door will also receive a free root beer from the A&W Root Bear.
The biggest winner of the Summer Rev Up, however, will be Stars for Life.
The cost for entrants is $10 per vehicle, or $5 per snowmobile or motorcycle. Admission for the general public is $5, while children 10 and under can enter for free.
The event runs Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.
