PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. — Cape Breton singers Rita MacNeil and Bruce Guthro, along with Toronto-based duo Madison Violet, will help kick off the 14th-annual Celtic Colours International Festival with an Oct. 8 concert titled “Home Is Where the Heart Is.”
Organizers say this year’s nine-day festival of music and culture at venues across Cape Breton Island, timed to coincide with the fall colours, will celebrate the concept of home, bringing back artists who haven’t played at the event for a couple of years.
Fiddler Natalie MacMaster, singer/songwriter J.P. Cormier and Celtic folk musician Mary Jane Lamond are among Island stars in the lineup, as well as a slate of performers from Scotland and Ireland including Liz Doherty, Tony McManus, Maire O’Keeffe and Nuala Kennedy.
There are over 40 concerts and more than 200 cultural events ranging from art exhibits and community meals to “kitchen racket” musical jam sessions where all are invited to participate.
Celtic Colours runs until Oct. 16.
