MILLBROOK - The Glooscap Heritage Centre is taking steps to preserve and protect the Mi'kmaq language.
An official announcement of the new project will be made on Friday at 9 a.m.
"We are committed to preserving, restoring fluency and literacy in the Mi'kmaq language. It is a part of our province's history that needs to be revitalized and preserved for future generations," said Glooscap Heritage Society chairman Lloyd Johnson.
With funding support from the healing fund of the United Church of Canada, the centre recently purchased three units of a new technology called the Phraselator.
The centre will use the "cutting edge translating technology" to preserve the many nuances of the Mi'kmaq language as spoken by elders in various Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq
communities.
Phraselators are hand-held devices, developed for the United States military, with the capacity of instantly recording, translating and playing back thousands of phrases, words, songs and stories.
Unlike most translating technologies, this device does not give a playback in a monotone, computerized voice, but in a pre-recorded language.
"With this advanced technology and accompanying software, we will finally be able to ensure the preservation and survival of every element that makes up the Mi'kmaq language," said the centre's general manager Sharon Touchie.
"We are very excited to be able to preserve the fascinating legends and myths of Glooscap in our native tongue."
