TRURO - New events and old favourites are kicking off this year's annual winter festival in Truro.
The festival is in its fourth year, but this year it's known as the Truro Winter Long John Festival. The name change is already generating an increased level of public attention.
"People are hearing about it, picking up on the name and saying they are interested in it," said Ashley Simms, the Town of Truro's community recreation co-ordinator.
"Some of them are surprised to learn it's the fourth year of the winter festival, so yes, the name change is helping."
The new name evolved after a Central Nova Tourism Association representative suggested it.
"It helps us take more ownership of the festival ... everyone thinks of long underwear and Stanfields in Truro," chuckled Simms.
Some of the new events for this year's festival include card making, encouraging people to turn on their Christmas lights for the week, friendly cross-country races and a dance.
Yearly favourite activities include wagon rides, snowshoeing, bonfires and skating.
Simms said the variety of events will be of interest to all ages, and is a way of dealing with the winter blues.
"People think they need to stay inside but that's not true ... and this is a way to encouraging being healthy.
"It's not just about exercise because being healthy isn't just about exercise but having fun," said Simms.
She said last year's festival brought out about 500 people throughout the week. She's hoping for at least 1,000 people to get involved this year.
