TRURO - John Scott did a double take and began rubbing his forehead as he looked on in wide-eyed, jaw-dropping amazement.
"That's unbelievable," he repeated, again and again, as he stared at the $10,000 figure written on the oversized ceremonial cheque held in front of him.
"Oh, that's wonderful. Unbelievable."
The cheque was presented as the proceeds from a fundraising effort held Monday night at the Colchester Legion Stadium during a game between the Cole Harbour McCain Major Midgets and the Valley Wildcats.
Scott's sons, Spencer, 17, and Mitchell, 15, both play for the team and the fundraiser was held on their behalf in memory of their mother, Kathy - a dedicated hockey mom - who died Jan. 24 of cancer.
"I just know so many people did so much in a very short period of time," Scott said. "It was done in a week's time that this was put together and they pulled it off. I don't know what else to say except thank you to everybody. There was so many people that took part in doing it."
All proceeds from Monday's game, along with a silent auction - which included signed NHL memorabilia - and a bake sale, went to the Scott family.
Cole Harbour coach Steve Crowell, who helped organize the event, said he was both overwhelmed and overjoyed by the response.
"We had hoped to raise $4,000 or $5,000 and as word got out that we were holding the event, we just had so many emails and phone calls of people who wanted to donate other auction items and bake sale items."
Even some mothers from the opposing Valley team brought baked goods to be sold, Crowell said.
"It speaks volumes for the community and it speaks volumes for Kathy and what she did, how she helped so many other people out. And I think that was just the support that everybody gave back to her family, which, I think is a real tribute to her."
Scott said his wife would also have been overwhelmed at the unexpected response to the hastily organized fundraiser.
"She would just love this," he said. "She loved to do these types of things ... it was exciting to her to do these types of things and she would be just amazed at this one, I'm sure."
