COBEQUID PASS - In an ironic twist-of fate a 16-year-old female from Londonderry, New Hampshire, was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle accident near Londonderry Nova Scotia, early Saturday morning.
Police said a Lincoln Navigator SUV and a Subaru station wagon were traveling west on Highway 104 when the Navigator veered into the passing lane, striking the station wagon, which then resulted in the Navigator losing control and rolling over in the ditch.
The driver and, mother of the deceased, was transported to Colchester Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the station wagon was apparently uninjured but nonetheless taken to hospital as a precaution.
Both westbound lanes of Highway 104, approximately one-km. east of the toll booth, were closed to traffic at Exit 11 around 10 a.m. following the incident.
A second accident, which police said occurred when a vehicle failed to stop at a detour around the scene, rear-ended another vehicle, causing the RCMP to then re-route traffic once more from Exit 12.
Neither driver was injured during the second collision, but one vehicle received extensive damage. The stretch of highway remained closed until 4 p.m., while police investigated the original crash
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family members.
Police said road conditions at the time were clear, and alcohol and drugs are not contributing factors.
