MASSTOWN - Masstown motorists will have to wait until next June for the paving project to be completed through the community.
The Highway 2 work includes a 3.3-kilometre section from McElmon Road to Putnam Road and a 2.4 kilometre section from Plains Road from McElmon Road east 2.4 kilometres. S.W. Weeks Contracting won the $1,891,644 contract earlier this year and the tender documents called for the project to be completed by the end of October.
"It has been extended to the end of November," Colchester North MLA Karen Casey said. "Weeks will be paying a penalty for every day from the end of October to the end of November that they're not able to deliver."
If the work is not finished by the end of this month, the per-day penalty stops until June 1. Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal spokesman Steve Smith said the per-day penalty is $1,500 and it would start again in June.
"They're expecting it to be complete now by the next June," he said Monday.
Casey said the money for the project was committed and neither the Progressive Conservative nor the new NDP government is at fault.
"However, the fact there was an election did put a delay in some of the contractors work and thus they are behind schedule," she said.

Well that's a real shocker. Since they put the new culverts in the road it is starting to chip away where they were paved over just wait till a plow nails them. No surprise that it will be June everyone wondered how they would ever be able to pave it now with the impending weather of November/December. Why break tradition of putting things off I just hope they take down the action plan signage. It seems putting stakes along the side of the road warrants one of these lovely billboards.
