FLORENCE — A pinch of salt and a dash of Cape Breton charm could earn Rick Simm the coveted title of Canada’s best dinner party host.

Simm will appear on the popular W Network television show “Come Dine With Me Canada” on Monday. The show sees five people host five dinner parties at their homes and then vote on each other’s performance as host to determine who gets the coveted title as well as a $1,000 prize.

“I keep my guests entertained and make some delicious food with sort of a Cape Breton flair,” said Simm, a 30-year-old Florence native, who believes the title is better than the cash prize because the winner gets to brag about it.

“I can’t reveal exactly what I made just yet but I can say that it has some really good Cape Breton influence.”

His five episodes have already been filmed and will air back-to-back beginning Monday at 8:30 p.m. local time.

“It starts off with the first night. I host on the second night and was a guest on the following three. The parties are a lot of fun. It’s five parties in a row, lots of booze and lots of food and lots of fun.”

Simm said his creativity and willingness to have fun makes him a good host.

“I think that I definitely learned to party at home for sure and then the cooking came after.”

He was a longtime fan of the show before deciding to take part.

“I watch it all the time and it popped up that they were looking for people so my friends said I should give it a shot, so I did.”

Though not allowed to reveal the final result, he did say he enjoyed the experience.

“It was a great experience with really nice people from all different walks of life. It was a great mix and a lot of fun.

Simm has been living in Toronto the past six years. When he’s not hosting parties, Simm works as an actor and an administrator for some Ontario theatre companies.

Recently, he spent 36 months touring with a live stage production of “Star Trek” across the United States and Canada. Before that he was part of a live “CSI” stage show in Los Angeles for five months.

Though live theatre makes up most of his work, he did have a guest spot during March Break on “Mad Science” on the Teletoon network doing science experiments and educational programming for kids.
