TRURO - Danielle Sawada has a passion for creating with clay and wants to encourage others to try it.
The owner of Thrown Together Pottery will be participating in a new program Try...Truro 2010, co-ordinated by the Town of Truro's parks, recreation and culture department.
"Clay is great," said Sawada, squeezing a ball of clay to form a hollow, pinched fish, one of the projects people trying her craft will learn to make.
"It's really meditative. When you are working with clay you really aren't thinking about anything else."
The first edition of the Try...Truro 2010 campaign identifies more than 40 free or low-fee activities available in and around Truro for people of all ages.
"This is an ideal campaign for people resolved to add more activities to their lives," said Cathy von Kintzel, special events and culture co-coordinator for the department.
"It's all worth a try."
The idea arose, in part, from a January 2009 strategic plan for the department, which indicated some people were looking for opportunities to try new things.
Activities offered include crafts, hobbies, the arts, healthy cooking, indoor and outdoor sports and much more.
The Try...Truro campaign also highlights programs offered on an ongoing basis by the parks, recreation and culture department, including weekly badminton, basketball
and gym time, as well as indoor and outdoor skating.
More details are posted on the Town of Truro website under parks, recreation and culture events and programs, and on the department's Facebook page. Information will be mailed to many Truro area residents and will be available at town hall. For information call 893-6078 or 893-6093 or email
"The first campaign of the year-long program runs from January to April," said von Kintzel. "That means there will be plenty of opportunity for area residents, businesses and community groups to suggest future activities for the rest of the year."
