HALIFAX - A heavy snow storm is expected over the weekend in the Maritimes, with forecasts calling for accumulations of up to 40 centimetres in parts of New Brunswick and southern Nova Scotia.
Environment Canada said Friday that a low-pressure system from the northeastern United States will pass by the East Coast, bringing freezing rain, ice pellets and snow.
Forecasters say the coastal areas of New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy will receive up to 25 centimetres of snow on Saturday, while other areas of the province will get five to 15 centimetres.
Meanwhile, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton were expecting winds of over 100 kilometres per hour.
Environment Canada predicts on its web site that there may be whiteouts on some highways.
It also said there are areas of southwestern Nova Scotia that will receive 40 centimetres of snow by late Saturday.
