TRUR0 - Rain is expected to be the biggest culprit of hurricane Bill when the storm passes through Colchester County Sunday.
"The biggest threat for Colchester County will be in the form of heavy rainfall ... 100 to 150 mm or four to six inches of rain between a six to nine-hour period," Chris Fogarty, a research meteorologist with the Canadian Hurricane Centre, told the Truro Daily News Friday.
As a result of the "strong category 2 or 3" storm flooding will be an issue.
Fogarty said wind is not expected to be as worrisome for the county. Early accounts indicate wind will register at about 70 km/hr.
County residents had mixed reactions to the impending storm.
"I'm not worried," said Hilden resident Jessica Burris.
"We get lots of storms around here and it probably won't be as bad (as forecasted)," she said.
"I am a little worried ... we'll have to move things (for protection) and there'll probably be a loss of power," said Debert's Bill Pictou.
Truro Mayor Bill Mills said the town is as prepared as it can be for the volatile weather.
"We have arrangements made for emergency fuel if needed and are getting updates from Nova Scotia Power regularly," said Mills.
The town has also requested tree cleanup companies be on standby and the Emergency Measures Office is ready for severe conditions as well.
"We are taking this on a more serious note than we did with (hurricane) Juan (in 2003)," said Mills. "We're probably on greater standby this time. You don't play with Mother Nature ... it can change in a nanosecond."
Carl Shaw, emergency measures' regional emergency management co-ordinator, said first responders will be on standby by supper today in case water rescue is required.
"Rivers are low ... but flooding is possible if there's a tremendous amount of rain in a short period of time," said Shaw.
