Mother Nature delivers 16 cm

TRURO - While some people dreaded dealing with the aftermath of a snowstorm early Wednesday, others enthusiastically grabbed their shovels.
"I love the winter. This doesn't bother me," said Truro resident John Wheelock, who was out shovelling his walkway late Wednesday afternoon.
Environment Canada told the Truro Daily News Wednesday the snowstorm dumped about 16 cm of snow in the Truro area overnight Tuesday and early Wednesday morning.
Students were given a day off school yesterday as Chignecto-Central Regional School Board officials called a storm day.
"Student safety is our first concern. (The decision) was based on the road conditions for transporting buses," said the school board's superintendent, Noel Hurley.
"It was not even safe in town and on the paved roads."
Hurley said the closure decision was made solely on safety concerns, and not due to backlash the board recently received in regards to keeping schools open during questionable weather over the last two weeks. During that time, two buses experienced minor mishaps but no injuries were incurred.
"It had nothing to do with the bus mishaps," Hurley said, adding feedback was positive to yesterday's cancellation decision.
"We've had a lot of positive comments from parents."
Cindy Vallis, a meteorologist based in the Dartmouth weather centre, said Truro wasn't the hardest hit area. It's estimated Yarmouth received 23 to 25 cm of snow while Halifax got 29 cm. Vallis said it does not appear any major storm systems are immediately headed our way.
No major accidents were reported by local police because of the storm.
