BASS RIVER - Martha Brown is eager to fight for the educational rights for the children attending Bass River Elementary School and West Colchester Consolidated School.
"I don't want to see any compromise made in either building when it comes to the education of the students," Brown, a member of the Bass River elementary school advisory committee, told the Truro Daily News.
Brown is one of many area residents concerned about the future of the two schools. The Chignecto-Central School Board is considering combining the elementary school with West Colchester consolidated. A public meeting to discuss a recent impact assessment report on the elementary school, and recommendations formed on that report by the Bass River Elementary School closure committee, will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at West Colchester Consolidated School.
"I'll be very disappointed in this process if they combine schools," said Brown, who was educated at the school, as were her mother and Brown's three children. Brown is the chairwoman of the committee responsible for reporting on the impact assessment. She presented the committee's findings to the school board's operational services committee last week.
Brown said some of the difficulties in combining the schools include crowding issues, no playground equipment for the youngster children and staggering of lunch periods.
Judi Kinsman does not have children attending the schools but is interested as a community member.
"I would like the schools to remain as they are ... it's mostly a space issue and age gap between students" if Grades Primary to 9 where under one roof, she said.
The women are anxious to hear other comments on the idea of consolidation, whether for or against. A school board representative told this paper anyone wishing to speak at Tuesday's public meeting is welcome to do so.

Combining schools is not always bad. Here in Oxford we have a Primary to Grade 12 school. Things are running fairly smoothly with a few bumps. A lot of the older kids are helping the younger ones. Remember when looking at the downfalls to look at the good points as well.
