TRURO - Bigger and better could be the slogan to ring in a new year and decade this week in Truro.
The town is utilizing the former Douglas Street elementary school to host the majority of its activities under one roof.
"Last year, we tried Victoria Park and
had a number of amazing comments and
a lot of people loved it," said Ashley Simms, community recreation co-ordinator for
the town's department of parks, recreation and culture.
"We also heard some people were concerned that they didn't like the separation and they wanted everything to happen in one spot."
Activities last year were held at the Normal College and Victoria Park.
This year, the entertainment will occur at the former Douglas Street school, with the fireworks to ring in the new year at midnight at Victoria Park.
For safety reasons, people are asked to use the streets, as opposed to trails, to walk to the park to see the show in the sky.
The school will be divided into fun-filled zones for children, teens and families.
Kids will enjoy making noisemakers, a magic show and an early countdown to the new year while youth can participate in a dodgeball tournament (pre-registration required by calling 893-6078), Wii challenges and a youth dance. There will also be movies and a concert.
Traditional favourites, including, a free skate at Colchester Legion Stadium and free swim at Centennial Pool, remain part of the festivities.
"We're making it bigger and better every year," Simms said.
"We're looking forward to it ... (The additions) gives a little bit more opportunity for the community to enjoy New Year's eve rather than just making it an evening event."
The school, which was returned to the town earlier this year, has made it possible to increase its activities because there are a number of rooms to add events.
People are reminded to park in designated areas at the school or at Victoria Park and to adhere to on-street parking regulations.

Nice to see the town keeping with the community spirit and trying to make the New Years celebration better each year. Everyone in the town that isn't doing anything specific should check this out. It's community minded, warm, and free!

i thought this was all settled in 2000 - but the new decade doesn't begin til jan 1 2011!!
