TRURO – The weather might still be frightful, but the Truro Art Society is celebrating spring.

The society’s annual Art in Bloom competition and show is quickly approaching, with a registration deadline set for May 24.

This year’s theme is floral and all artwork must be original and not previously shown. Artists can submit up to three original pieces of 2-D or 3-D artwork. All media is accepted, including painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, glass, and fabric/fibre art. Framed artwork must be equipped with D-rings or screw eyes and wire.

The show and competition is open to all visual artists in Nova Scotia, and runs from May 27 to June 27 at the McCarthy Art Gallery, 36 Arthur St., Truro. An opening reception and announcement of winners will take place May 31, 2 to 4 p.m., at the gallery.

Registration fee is $20 for Truro Art Society members and $25 for non-members. Artists must submit a single page artist biography for the exhibition book. Artwork must be delivered to the gallery between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on May 24. No sawtooth hangers, staples or duct tape.

A number of prizes will be given away, including cash prizes of $200, $150 and $100 for first, second and third place respectively. A $100 Carol MacFadyen Award will be given to the best society member entry and there will also be a People’s Choice Award of $50 given out on June 27.

Last year, Twila Robar DeCoste of Aylesford took the top spot, with New Glasgow’s Dan Munroe coming in second and Joy Laking of Bass River placing third. Truro’s Danielle Sawada was honoured with the People’s Choice Award.
