Ticket sales for eighth annual event in Bible Hill selling at a brisk pace

BIBLE HILL - One of the final acts for this weekend's Dutch Mason Blues Festival has cancelled its performance due to the death of one of its musicians.

The Marshall Tucker Band won't be attending the eighth annual event at the Truro Raceway because the funeral for Stuart Swanlund is Saturday.

Swanlund, 54, died in his sleep on Monday.

"With his funeral on Saturday, it logistically affects the band's flights," said festival producer David DeWolfe. "We're looking forward to having them play next year."

The guitarist had joined the band in 1985 following the band's split and subsequent regroup. Swanlund, however, wasn't active in the band for most of 2012 due to health problems.

To fill the void on Sunday just prior to the finale, DeWolfe said he has a number of musicians who are ready to fill the spot.

"We are going to run the format the same way and we're looking for a special surprise," he said.

A woman working with the festival reported brisk ticket sales yesterday.

"Especially over the phone. We've been on the phone constantly," she said.

The festival begins today and runs until Sunday.

Highlights include James Cotton, Delbert McClinton, John Oates, Shirley King, Jimmy D Lane, The Georgia Satellites, Lukas Nelson and The Sheepdogs, as well as a number of homegrown musicians such as Garrett Mason and Charlie A'Court.

Tickets are still available for the festival and can be purchased at the gate or by calling 1-866-993-8824. More information is available at www.dutchmason.com/festival.

Um, and how much money will this festival lose this year? And how long will it take for the organizers to plead for help from municipal and provincial governments?? Same old, same old.
