ANTIGONISH, N.S. - Conciliation talks between St. Francis Xavier University and faculty ended late last week without reaching a settlement.
The two sides were in conciliation for three days starting Jan. 14.
Talks resumed last Thursday but broke off early Friday morning.
The conciliator has 14 days to file a report with the labour minister.
A work stoppage can't occur before that time.
The St. Francis Xavier Association of University Teachers represents about 400 academic staff who in December voted 82 per cent in favour of a strike.
The employees' first three-year contract expired last June.
Talks between the university and the union originally broke off in November.
Academic staff are seeking wage parity with their counterparts from other post-secondary schools.
Salaries at St. F.X. range from $51,912 for experienced lecturers to $126,307 for the most senior full-time professors.
