NEWCASTLE, N.B. - Fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of a weekend blaze that destroyed a historic building in downtown Newcastle.
The Opera House nightclub, which was housed in a 105-year-old building, was gutted in a fire than began Saturday afternoon and turned quickly into an inferno.
Miramichi fire Chief John Mather said Monday the fire broke out on the Opera House's third floor and firefighters were forced to turn back due to intense heat and smoke.
Two Opera House employees were in the building but escaped uninjured.
The Opera House opened in 1905 and began screening silent films.
It later became a venue for live theatre and music.
