HALIFAX - The Nova Scotia government is giving the public another way to monitor weather and road conditions on the notorious Cobequid Pass.
The pass on Highway 104 will join a list of almost 50 locations in the province that are monitored by highway cameras.
The pass opened in 1997 as an alternative to a dangerous route over Folly Mountain, but critics argued the route over the Cobequid Mountains would be a weather nightmare.
A sudden blast of wintry weather on Nov. 19, 2008, left more than 1,500 people stranded overnight in their vehicles on the pass.
Images from all of the Transportation Department cameras are available online at www.gov.ns.ca/tran/cameras/camera.asp.
The government says the camera page on the department's website receives up to 250,000 visits a month during the winter.
