PUGWASH, N.S. - Emergency room closures are continuing at Nova Scotia's North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, but they are becoming less frequent.
The ER in the community of Pugwash is closed today for 12 hours because there is no doctor to fill the shift.
The current closure is the 13th since a new physician and nurse practitioner arrived in the community in September.
Before that, there had been more than 40 closures since May.
Local health authority spokeswoman Ann Keddy says the arrival of the two health professionals came just before an interim funding arrangement with the province, which offers competitive locum payments at rural hospitals.
Keddy says there has been no news on whether the agreement will be extended beyond Jan. 1, but the authority is anticipating it will remain in place until a provincial advisor on patient care finishes his review of emergency health care.
