LYON, France - The premier of Quebec hopes Stephen Harper does more than just show up at the upcoming UN climate summit and says the prime minister should take a leadership role in fighting climate change.
Jean Charest had already planned to be at the Copenhagen conference, and he told reporters he is pleased the prime minister decided this week he also would attend.
"I applaud Mr. Harper's decision," Charest said Friday during a trip to Lyon, France.
"It was the right decision to make."
But he said he wants Canada - and the prime minister - to play a leading role at the conference.
He said it would be wrong for Canada to simply go there and parrot whatever position U.S. President Barack Obama takes.
"That's not enough," Charest said.
"It's the American president who will set the tone at the conference but, that being said, if we want results we need to show leadership. . .
"We, Quebecers, believe we need to show leadership and we believe the same is true for Canada."
After Obama announced this week he would head to Copenhagen, Harper declared he would also be there.
