TRURO - Special teen and parent workshops and a community banquet will take place in Truro to celebrate Christian Counselling Ministries' 15th anniversary.
Media.Faith.Culture is the youth workshop being offered Oct. 23 by Brett Ullman. It focuses on trends in modern media and potential effects on youths' lives.
Ullman, from Ontario, travels across North America addressing adolescents, leaders and their parents on topics including sexuality, substance abuse and self-injury.
"One-third of (CCM clients) are youth-related, especially with the prevalence of blended families and divorce," said Brian Schrock, executive director of CCM.
"If we can equip youth and parents with good coping skills it may decline the need for counselling later."
The youth workshop is open to teenagers, parents, youth leaders, teachers and social workers. It takes place at Archway Place at 883 Prince St. from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $10 per student and includes pizza and music by DJ Sugarfree. Youth who arrive by 6:45 will enter a draw for an iPod shuffle.
A parent workshop will be held Oct. 24 at Archway Place from 9 to 11 a.m. and costs $20.
Also in recognition of CCM's 15th anniversary, a celebration banquet takes place Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist. The gathering will include food and song with special guest Trevor Dick, an electric and acoustic violinist from Ontario. Banquet cost is $35; register by calling 893-3991.
CCM is a non-denominational, charitable organization, governed by a volunteer board and staffed by four trained professionals. HighRock Youth Ministries is the youth division of CCM. The organization also features Slate Youth Centre, a drop-in facility.
A CCM office has also opened in Lower Sackville and one is about to open in Westville.
