TRURO - Jack Saunders and his wife love visiting auctions looking for unique collectables to sell at their antiques store in P.E.I.
It's a tradition for the couple to attend auctions on the May long weekend.
"My wife, this is her social life, she just loves auctions," said Saunders.
He said auctions are
great places to pick up deals on good quality furniture, that often sells for 10 to 15 per cent of the cost to purchase new lower quality items.
He offers this advice for first- time auction goers to get the most out of the experience:
1. You should always go to the preview. When items are placed out on tables for viewing, buyers can get an up-close, hands-on look at them to see if they are in good repair or if they may need care.
2. Sit or stand within the auctioneer's line of sight. There is no location advantage but you want the auctioneer to see you when you bid.
3. When you are serious about your bid, get your paddle up high so the auctioneer can see it.
4. If possible do some of your own research about the value of items for sale.
