TRURO – One day after declaring herself a candidate for the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board’s upcoming election, Sharron Byers has withdrawn her candidacy.
The deadline to apply for the municipal elections next month was Tuesday at suppertime. Byers was one of three candidates vying for the Truro seat of the school board - the other two are Robert Cullen and Susan MacQuarrie – and all candidates had until 4 p.m. on Wednesday to withdrawn their name. Byers took herself out of the running early afternoon yesterday.
“I have observed that my fellow opposing candidates are parents of young children in the school system,” Byers told the Truro Daily News.
“I have a very sincere interest in the present and future direction of our education system, but feel it may be appropriate at this time to step aside and afford others the opportunity to run without further competition or opposition. I wish them both all the best.”
Byers had previously served the town and Colchester County councils a combined 25 years. She didn’t re-offer for one of two Ward 3 seats in the town election, a position she’s held since 1997.
