TRURO – Half of Truro town council will consist of new faces when next month’s municipal elections take place.

Three councillors – Diane Bennett Cook, Charles Cox and Sharron Byers - have not reoffered for their positions.

The deadline to declare candidacy for municipal elections closed on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

There are two people vying for the mayor’s position: incumbent Bill Mills and Keltie Jones. Mills has been on Truro town council for 24 years and mayor since 1997.

Jones is an associate vice-president for students at the Dalhousie Agriculture College in Bible Hill. This is her first attempt at landing a position on Truro town council.

Ward 1 has attracted five candidates vying for two seats, including one incumbent, Raymond Tynes. There are three people competing for Ward 2 seats, including incumbent Brian Kinsman, while Ward 3 has declared five candidates, including incumbent Greg MacArther.

Truro’s returning officer, Jud Pearson, is pleased the election attracted a lot of interest.

“We have a race in every ward in Truro, for mayor and for the local school board seat,” said Pearson. “Last election, we only had a race in Ward 2 and 3 and school board.”

According to Pearson, candidates have until today at 5 p.m. to withdraw.

The first day of electronic voting is Oct. 11 at noon until Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. More information on electronic voting will be on individual voter cards that will be mailed out to residents.

The following is a complete list of candidates in the Town of Truro and for the Truro and African Nova Scotian school board seats. An asterisk beside a name indicates an incumbent. A complete list of Colchester County candidates will appear in Thursday’s Truro Daily News.
