TRURO - With its heritage buildings, tourist attractions, parks and so much more, Truro is a photographer's paradise.
The Town of Truro Tourism Committee is hoping avid photographers of all ages, both professional and amateur, will be willing to share their photographs for a new souvenir postcard project.
"We often hear how residents and visitors are looking for a souvenir or keepsake that is uniquely Truro," said Sharron Byers, a Truro town councillor and chair of the town's tourism committee, in a news release.
"A collection of souvenir postcards is one way in which the tourism committee is hoping to meet that public demand."
The committee is looking for current photographs of easily recognizable Truro landmarks and activities, including buildings, parks, monuments, streetscapes, events and more, during all four seasons.
The photographs will be compiled into souvenir postcard folders depicting 18 town scenes. The folders will be sold at the Truro Welcome Centre in Victoria Square.
The contest is open to people of all ages, amateurs and professionals. Winners must be willing to transfer all rights for their photos to the Town of Truro for use in the postcard folder and other town-related promotions.
Winners will not receive money for their photographs, but will be given photo credit in the souvenir postcard folder. They will also each receive three complimentary copies of the completed project.
The tourism committee got the idea for the souvenir postcard folder from a resident who had an aged, undated copy of a similar project done in Truro. The only indication of when the folder was produced is that the Union Jack is on the cover.
That folder includes 18 pictures. There are photographs of such places as the Scotia Hotel, the old railway station, churches, Victoria Square and Victoria Park, as well as a view down Prince Street and an aerial view of the town.
Participants can submit a maximum of three photographs each. Entries may be submitted as digital jpeg files or as prints. Digital files must be burned to a disk, and will not be accepted via email.
Prints must be unframed and unmounted in a 4x6 size format. Prints and disks may be submitted by mail or in person to the Town of Truro Civic Building, 695 Prince St., Truro, N.S./P.O. Box 427, B2N 5C5.
All submissions must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. Please provide your name and contact information. Only photographers who have their work selected for the postcard project will be contacted.
To ensure a quality product, the tourism committee reserves the right to independently source photographs if the contest does not result in a sufficient number of suitable images which reflect the entire community.
Participants can request to have unused prints and disks saved for pickup at the Civic Building. Otherwise, the unused prints and disks will be destroyed.
A complete list of contest rules is available on the Town of Truro website at www.truro.ca.
