Breaching house arrest nets man probation
TRURO - A Salmon River man who breached the conditions of his house arrest by drinking has been sentenced to six months of
probation.
Greg Ross Withrow, 36, of 74 Harmony Rd., was given a suspended sentence following an appearance in provincial court Wednesday morning. He was placed on house arrest in late July and then subsequently arrested in late October after police were called to his residence to deal with a domestic disturbance.
In addition to his probation time, which begins after his conditional sentence is complete, Withrow was ordered to "successfully" take counselling for alcohol consumption and must pay $207 in restitution for damaging a sprinkler in the Truro police cells. While under the court orders, Withrow is not allowed to consume or use alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

Fine levied,
licence revoked
TRURO - A Truro man convicted of failing the breathalyser was Wednesday handed a $1,000 fine and one-year driving ban.
Dale Phillip Justin Hartling, 20, of 81 Brunswick St., also received a suspended sentence and 12 months probation after pleading guilty to stealing from the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and of being at large on an undertaking. As part of his conditions Hartling must stay away from all NSLC outlets and all recognized drinking establishments and not have contact with anyone with a criminal record.

Man convicted of defrauding store
TRURO - A Truro man convicted of defrauding a local hardware store was given a suspended sentence and 18 months probation on Wednesday.
Harvey Wayne Lunn, 56, of 785 Prince St., Apt. 14, was also ordered to pay $436 to Home Hardware for replacement of a chop saw and a reciprocating saw. As well, he must perform 30 hours community service, not possess or use illicit drugs or alcohol, not enter drinking establishments and take counselling for alcohol consumption.

Wood Street resident gets suspended sentence
TRURO - A man convicted of defrauding another individual was this week handed a suspended sentence and 12 months probation. Frederick Reginald Murphy, 30, of 71 Wood St., was also ordered to perform 10 hours of community service and pay $160 to the Bank of Montreal.

Indian Brook man jailed for theft, breach
TRURO - An Indian Brook man convicted of stealing from Zellers and of breaching his probation was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Jeremiah Justin Paul, 25, of 486 Hollywood Dr., was sentenced in provincial court this week after pleading guilty to the offences in September.

Man assaulted mother, failed to keep peace
TRURO - A Truro man convicted of assaulting his mother was this week handed a suspended sentence and 12 months probation.
Alexander Emery Borden, 19, of 23 Slack St., also pled guilty to a breach of a court undertaking by failing to keep the peace.
Borden, who is facing further charges of assault and uttering threats to another individual, was released on $1,000 bail.
He is to return to court on those charges on Feb. 18. While on probation, Borden is banned from possessing or consuming alcohol or other intoxicating substances, must stay out of drinking establishments and must successfully complete counselling for alcohol consumption. For the first 30 days of his probation, he is subject to a curfew from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the following six months.

Masstown man found guilty of several charges
TRURO - A Masstown man convicted of assaulting a woman was handed a suspended sentence and 18 months probation on Thursday.
Robert Joseph Wells, 21, of 42 Putnam Rd., Apt. 2, was found guilty following a trial held in provincial court in Truro. He was also convicted of driving while his licence was disqualified, for which he was fined $1,150.
Wells also had his licence revoked for 12 months and was convicted of breaching a court undertaking by failing to abstain for drinking.
While on probation, he is not allowed to possess or consume alcohol, must successfully complete counselling as directed regarding anger management and pay a $100 victim surcharge fine.
