Possession of marijuana for purpose of trafficking results in jail time
TRURO - A local man convicted of possessing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking was sentenced this week to 10-and-a-half weeks in jail.
The sentence handed to Paul Mohammed Joseph, 45, of 11 Center St., Apt. 4, also included a conviction for a separate marijuana possession charge and for several instances of breaking court undertakings by failing to adhere to curfew conditions and for possessing or consuming illicit drugs while ordered not to.
Truro man gets two years in federal prison after bail surety was revoked
TRURO - A Truro man was sentenced to two years federal time after his bail surety was revoked this week in provincial court.
Daniel Thomas MacCallum, 19, of 10 Aberdeen St., pleaded guilty to theft and of failing to abide by his curfew and other court undertakings, including that he keep the peace, abstain from illicit drugs and not associate with known criminals.
He also pleaded guilty to possessing
marijuana.
MacCallum must submit a DNA sample
and is banned from possessing firearms for 10 years.
Sambro men charged with sexual assault to be tried by judge alone
TRURO - Two Sambro men charged with sexual assault have elected to be tried by judge alone in Nova Scotia Supreme Court.
A two-day preliminary hearing has been scheduled on Sept. 17 and 22 in Truro for Ryan Darrell Garrison, 25, of 66 George Gray Rd. and Stephen Clifford Brown, 52, of 6150 Old Sambro Rd.
A publication ban is in place to prevent revealing the identity of the complainant.
Milford man pleads guilty to failing breathalyser, fined $800
TRURO - A Milford man was fined $800
and had his driver's license revoked for
one year after pleading guilty to failing
the breathalyser.
Scott Stephen Hewens,34, of 1991 Highway 2, was charged after his car went into the ditch shortly before midnight on Aug. 18, 2007. Court heard that he had been drinking at Whistler's Pub in Stewiacke shortly before the accident.
Although Hewens, who registered a blood/alcohol level of .20, was given an elevated fine because of the high reading, the amount of his fine was based on figures in place on the date he was charged.
Truro man fined, loses licence after failing the breathalyser
TRURO - A "visibly intoxicated" Truro man charged after being pulled over at a police spot check this week was fined $1,150 in provincial court.
Robert John Wells, 20, also lost his driving privileges for one year after pleading guilty to failing the breathalyser.
When pulled over at the spot check, police found two empty beers cans on the floor of his vehicle along with an open case of beer on the passenger side.
"Courts don't tolerate this Mr. Wells," Judge Laurel Halfpenny-MacQuarrie said during
sentencing.
