THUNDER BAY, Ont. - A Langley, B.C., man has been charged with a variety of offences after a accident near the northwestern Ontario community of Ignace last week.
After responding to the single-vehicle crash on Highway 17 on Jan. 28, provincial police officers called for assistance from the drug enforcement section and provincial asset forfeiture unit.
Further investigation led to the seizure of more than $750,000 in Canadian currency, a handgun and $100 worth of prescription drugs.
"They were on the ball," Cmdr.-Supt. Ron van Straalen said Thursday about the frontline officers who attended the crash.
Insp. Don Perron, program manager of the provincial asset forfeiture unit, said police try to hit criminal organizations where it counts - in the wallet.
"Focusing on removing ill-gotten profits from the criminal economy is an important component of the police strategy to combat organized crime," he said.
A 29-year-old man has been charged with nine offences, including two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and various firearm-related charges.
He remains in custody while awaiting a bail hearing.
