TRURO - More than 4,500 electors within the three ridings that encompass Truro and Colchester County had exercised their right to vote prior to election day.
"Way up," (from the last election in 2009), said Colchester North returning officer Lorraine Dawson, of voting numbers from the advance polls on Friday and Saturday.
This year saw 1,030 voters participating in the advance polls in Colchester North, compared to 857 votes cast in the advance polls for 2009.
That riding also saw 507 voters participate in the continuous polls and 61 votes cast through write-in ballots. Another 16 write-in votes were cast through the riding for other districts.
"I think that it is just the voter awareness and the enthusiasm that has been generated," Dawson said. "And I think, too, the timing of the election might be having something to do with it."
Christine Blair, returning officer for the riding of Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River, agreed that the election timing may be contributing to voter enthusiasm but she said a lot more people seem also to be studying the party platforms and looking closely at their respective candidates.
‘"I'm going to wait and see,'" she said, of a common refrain being heard from voters coming into the office to check on their information.
"A lot of them seem to be voting for the candidate and want to make a more informed decision before casting their ballot," she said, of the comments they are sharing.
Blair also said the continuous polls, where people were allowed to go into returning offices to cast their vote prior to the official advance polls, "was a huge success."
The advance polls in the Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River riding saw 882 people casting their votes on Friday and Saturday while another 1,150 electors exercised their votes through the continuous polls.
During the 2009 election, 1,163 people in that riding cast their votes during the advance polls.
A total of 110 write-in ballots were cast this year, as well as 115 write-in ballots for other districts.
In the Colchester-Musqudoboit Valley riding, 579 votes were cast in the advance polls (compared to 507 in 2009) with another 288 votes cast in the continuous polls.
As well, 58 votes were cast through write-ins for the district along with 21 write-ins for other districts.
