MILLBROOK - Band administrator Alex Cope, yesterday convicted of drug and firearms possession charges, will not have to give up his job.
He will, however, have to resign his seat as a band councillor.
Chief Lawrence Paul said anyone convicted of an indictable offence under Canada's Criminal Code must give up the council position. But the chief said that does not restrict Cope from running during the next band elections, which are set for February.
But given the fact that Cope's illegal activities occurred outside of his working hours and did not involve the band, Paul said, council has decided he can keep his position as administrator, which he has held for almost 20 years.
"He is a very good band manager, band administrator, and we have no problem with him doing his job," he said.
"Usually somebody during their lifetime runs afoul of the law some time ... I think a valuable lesson was learned today."
Cope also serves as Millbrook's representative on the school board (from which he is currently on a leave of absence), but Paul said he did not know if that position would be affected by the criminal convictions.
