FIVE ISLANDS - People from Kuwait, Germany, England and Australia will run beside entrants from the United States and Canada here this weekend during the third annual Not Since Moses Run.
Whereas last year's Not Since Moses drew participants in the hundreds, this year's event has grown into a two-day event with entrants numbering near the thousands.
"It has exploded," said Dick Lemon, owner and operator of Mo's CafÉ and Dick's Island Retreat and run organizer.
"We have the kids run on Saturday and Sunday plus two days of running."
On Saturday, the day begins with a 9 a.m. mud run of 100, 500 and 1,000 metres, then 5 km and 10 km runners have a 10:30 a.m. start.
Because of the large sign-up, and elementary schools in the area holding their grading day ceremonies on Saturday, another kids' run will be held Sunday as well as a second 10 km run.
In May, the Not Since Moses website announced it was booked to capacity, with an estimated 800 people from around the globe enlisted.
Like last year, Lemon said once the runners start they will find themselves on the ocean's floor where it is only a matter of time before the tide returns and vanishes the course under the Bay of Fundy.
"There is no way to turn around and run back to shore. We know the quick power and sweep of the incoming tides."
Saturday night a free concert for participants and their families will be put on by Alana Yorke, Kev. Corbett, Steven Bowers and Keith Mullins. This will be under a tent in the garden behind Mo's at Five Islands, a cafÉ in the middle of the village.
As an added bonus runners can turn their bibs in for cash following the race.
Mo's has offered $5 to the merchants along the shore (from Great Village to Parrsboro) for each bib they take as credit toward a purchase.
"This is a first-time effort and though I have tried to let all the businesses know about it, there may be some who won't have heard or who choose not to participate and, in that case, sorry, but use the bib elsewhere."
