Registration opens with goal of exceeding 500 participants, 75 million steps

Last year, participating Colchester County residents registered nearly 31 million steps as part of the eight-week, Step Into Spring program.

This year, organizers of the annual challenge hope more people than ever will join the program and then email or phone in their weekly step counts to boost that number much higher.

“By joining the Step Into Spring program, you’ve taken the first step to living a healthy lifestyle,” says Jennifer Richards of Colchester Recreation Services. “This year we hope to reach 500 participants and reach more than 75 million steps. But we’ll need everyone’s help in achieving this goal.”

While hundreds of people register for the program each year, they all don’t record and submit their step counts.

“By registering you’re taking the first step toward helping us surpass our numbers from last year,” Richards says. “The next step is to register your steps each week through email or by phone.”

The Step Into Spring program encourages people to boost their current levels of physical activity and to step up their fitness. Participants track their daily steps using a pedometer they receive in their registration packages.

Registration began March 24 and the step counting officially runs from March 29 to May 23. The cost is $10 per person. In addition to a pedometer, participants receive a reusable bag, clip-on LED light, walking tips and more.

Participants can also win prizes. Weekly draws begin Apr. 7.

“Go ahead,” Richards says. “Challenge yourself, your family and your co-workers to take the first steps to living a healthy and active lifestyle!”

Registration packages are available throughout Colchester County: Colchester Recreation Services, 1 Church St. (third floor); Truro Parks, Recreation and Culture, Douglas Street Recreation Centre, 40 Douglas St.; Village of Bible Hill, 67 Pictou Rd.; Town of Stewiacke, 295 George St.; and Open Doors, 299 Main St., Tatamagouche.
