Town, County joining up to hostlarger-than-ever joint celebration

Volunteers. We know them and see them everywhere, but how often do we really take the time to thank them?

Well, this is the time.

The Town of Truro and the County of Colchester are currently accepting nominations for their annual Volunteer Appreciation Awards.

The first deadline is Feb. 20, to give organizers time to select worthy candidates for recognition at the Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony being held in Halifax in early April.

If you miss the first deadline, then it’s still not too late to nominate a volunteering individual, family, youth, community group or business to receive regional recognition during a Volunteer Appreciation Night to be held on April 15.

For the first time, the local awards night will be a larger-than-ever joint celebration, co-hosted by both the town and the county. The two municipalities have also partnered on a joint application form to make nominations as easy as possible. The second deadline is Mar. 7.

“There are tremendous volunteers in our community who go above and beyond,” says Craig Burgess, manager of Recreation Services for Colchester County. Burgess says organizers welcome as many nominees as possible.

“We can never say thank you to all of our volunteers, but it would be nice to recognize as many as we can each year. Volunteers are the heart of our communities and we need to celebrate each and everyone.”

Doug MacKenzie, recreation director for Truro Parks, Recreation and Culture, encourages people who know worthy volunteers to nominate them as soon as possible.

“The application process is easy, and it’s a worthwhile effort,” MacKenzie says.

Application forms are available online at www.truro.ca or www.colchester.ca, via email at recdept@truro.ca or recreation@colchester.ca, or in person at Douglas Street Recreation Centre, 40 Douglas St., Truro or Colchester County Recreation Services, 1 Church St., Truro.

Volunteer Week will be held Apr. 6 to 13. The 40th Annual Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony will be held on Apr. 7, featuring a luncheon in Halifax. More than 70 volunteers will be honoured.
