Maitland and Area Notebook, Susan Sweet
Students at the Maitland and District Elementary School have much more than Halloween to look forward to on Oct. 31.
The school is planning a bus trip to the Elmsdale District School to take in a performance of Symphony Nova Scotia, followed by a visit to the Provincial Wildlife Park in Shubenacadie.
Congratulations to the entire school who raised an impressive total of $789.40 in the Terry Fox Walk.
The home and school advisory council will meet on Nov. 4. Catherine Yuill will remain chairwoman of the group and they are looking for new parent members.
The Maitland school is the local site for Zumba classes conducted by Rachel McCrimmon of Upper Kennetcook. Zumba is a fitness program created by Beto Perez and inspired by his love of Latin dance.
Rachel is licensed to teach the dance styles of cumbia, salsa, reggaelon and merengue. She will also soon take training in bollywood, quebradita, samba and flamenco inspired moves, although she does include some of those now.
Rachel says she “has always had a love affair with fitness” and was interested in Zumba for several years. She finds it fun combining dance styles and getting fit.
She plans to continue classes at the Maitland school in November and she posts the dates at the Frieze and Roy store. For class details her website is: rachelmccrimmon033.zumba.com
Rosemary Clark of South Maitland is now offering lessons in voice and piano to people from school-age children to adults. Rosemary is a graduate of Acadia University with a bachelor of music in vocal performance.
She was seven years old when her parents bought a piano and she was offered lessons. She says it was in elementary school when music teachers noticed her voice and she often sang the solos in the school performances. At age 11 she began vocal training and went on to competitions, music exams and other performances.
Rosemary teaches singing to people of various levels and purposes. She can prepare students for exams, competitions, performances, festivals, improvement in ability to participate in choirs and community events, and for personal enjoyment. The piano lessons are mostly geared towards beginners and intermediate players.
Rosemary may be contacted at 261-2275 for more information on her voice and piano lessons.
Like most volunteer fire departments, the Maitland Fire Department auxiliary works hard to fundraise year round. We are looking forward to the annual fundraising calender that comes out in November. Folks who order the calenders will often have their important dates like birthdays and anniversaries included in the print. No excuse for most people not to remember those dates anymore.
Bing's Eatery and Socialhouse is now open for Sunday brunch right up until Christmastime. The restaurant opens Sundays at 9 a.m. and the brunch menu will include classic breakfast items as well as waffles and eggs benedict. Their autumn hours are Thursday to Saturday 4 to 8 p.m. and Sundays they are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 8913 Highway 215 in Maitland. Call 261-3287 for more information.
The Maitland Christmas Festival is being planned for Nov. 21 to 24. In addition to the decorated heritage homes, gentleman's tea, church supper, art sale and Christmas tree stroll, the Gallery 215 building in Selma hosts a very popular and unique craft show Nov. 22 to 24.
While most Christmas craft shows offer rented space to various crafts people and artisans to set up their displays, this sale does all that for the vendors. Crafters bring their wares to the gallery building and the organizers take over the merchandising and display. The resulting setup is a charming, eclectic mix of locally made products. Sales and customer service is handled by the hard working volunteers. Interested crafts people can contact Susan Marlin at 261-2223 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on having their work at this year’s craft sale.
