TRURO - In a word - "devastated."
That was the reaction expressed by a veteran employee of the Colchester Co-op of the mood by staff when they were informed Sunday evening that the co-operative grocery store is shutting down.
"We were devastated," said Karen MacKay, who has worked at the community store for 25 years and who described her time there as "awesome."
"Just like a family," she said, tearfully, of her co-workers. "It's your home away from home here (for 40 hours per week)."
Leslie Burrows, a 15-year board director at the community-owned store, echoed MacKay's comments, both regarding the family-
type atmosphere and the devastation felt
by employees when they heard the news on Sunday. "Being a director, I spent a lot of time here," Burrows said.
Both women blamed the general economic situation, coupled with a growing desire by shoppers to get their groceries from the larger, more competitive box stores, as the causes of the Co-op's demise.
Spokesman Stephen Nielson said none of the blame for the closing could be placed on the back of the store's 20 part-time and seven full-time employees.
"I would like to express our appreciation to our employees for their hard work in trying to make our business a success," he said.
"This situation in no way reflects a lack of commitment on their part."
The six people employed at the Co-op farm store will not be affected by the closing of the grocery store.

I think a number of factors have led the Co-op to this position. Location, traffic patterns in the area, limited product selection. But the one reason I did not shop there was the lack of customer service. Often when asked for my customer number which I don't have, I was never offered one. The one time I did ask for an application form to fill out, I was told I had to fill it out right then and there. I wanted to take it home to fill out, but they wouldn't let me. Just give me the app, I'll fill it out at my convenience and bring it back. Maybe that's why they don't have the membership they needed to keep going.
